Mid-East Area Agency on Aging will be assisting Medicare Beneficiaries with Open Enrollment.  Open Enrollment begins October 15th and ends December 7th for changes to be effective January 1st.  Any Medicare Beneficiary using a Medicare Advantage plan or Medicare Drug Plan can meet with MEAAA for plan comparison and enrollment assistance.  Staff will be available to meet in person on the following dates/locations:

Applications are being accepted for the January Free Tuition Computer Support program.  Applications may be obtained at Jefferson College and/or Missouri Career Center in Arnold.
Classes will meet at Jefferson College ARNOLD.

Applications are also being accepted for the Radiologic Technology AAS Program.  Applicants must download the full application packet at: http://www.jeffco.edu/jeffco/content/view/843/116/ and follow all directions.   Applicants must complete the separate Eligibility Review Form. Tuition for this program will be free for eligible candidates as part of the MoHealthWINS initiative.

The next Community Forum meeting will be October 15th at 1:00 at Jefferson College, Viking Annex room.  We will be electing new chair members at the November meeting, nominations will be gladly accepted, so please consider serving!

The Community Forum will be hitting the road during 2013 for the months of March, June, July and October.  March will be held at the Arnold Career Center, 3675 W. Outer Rd, Arnold, MO – thank you Sandy Nappier for setting that up!  And June will be held at the MEAAA Northwest Senior Resource Center, 6180 Hwy MM, House Springs.  July and October are still open and we are looking for possible host agencies.

DeSoto Farmer’s Market will hold two upcoming events at 1004 Rock Rd:   

Celebrate Our Heritage event will be held September 22 from 8:00-12:00pm.  There will be a Civil War Reenactment as well as artisan demonstrations.   

Art Mart Day at the Market will be held September 29th from 8:00-12:00pm.  All artisans are invited to display their crafts at the Farmer’s Market.  Call 636-586-4570 for more info on these events.
Get Healthy DeSoto is hosting a Christmas Home Tour Fundraiser on November 24, 2012 from 9:00-3:30.  Advanced tickets are $15, tickets the day of will be $18.  There will also be a raffle for a large flat screen TV.  For tickets call Debby Campbell at 636-586-4570.

Get Healthy Desoto will host a Winter Flakes Run on December 29th in Walther Park.  There will be a 1 Mile Fun Walk, and 5K and 10K Runs.  Registration will be 7:00-8:30am and the race begins at 9:00am.  For more information, visit gethealthydesoto.org or call 636-586-4570.

Mid-East Area Agency on Aging holds a monthly Caregiver Support Group on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 2pm in the Northwest Senior Resource Center, 6180 Hwy MM, House Springs, MO 63051.  The group is open to any caregiver looking for support and resources.  For more information call Stephanie at 636-253-0558.

Housekeeping topics: Proposal to cancel July meeting.  None opposed.  Proposal for next year to host meetings at member agencies in turn.  Jefferson College is technically supposed to charge for meeting room use, and relocating would free meeting room for other groups.  Hosting would provide opportunity for members to become more familiar with each others’ facilities, staff, and services.  No decision necessary today.  Discussion included request for clear directions to meeting sites if this is what eventually decided.

Dream Big – READ! Missey Waldman:

MO Dept. of Social Services, Family Services Division is going to an automated telephone system with no live support.  Families in the system with issues can be referred to the Advocates for Family Health, LSEM hotline: 314-534-1263 or 1-800-444-0514, x1251

MO Health Net spend down calculations are changing to meet public guidelines.  After 7/1/12 these changes will affect dialysis patients, with transportation to dialysis being an issue.  Patients can be referred to the Advocates for Family Health hotline.

Starting in July, there will be the three managed-care plans for the region.  Families may find themselves with a different plan than previously.  Open enrollment for Health Care USA, Missouri Care, and the Home State Health Plan managed-care plans ends 7/1/12. 

Wage match quarterly review by FSD: People are losing coverage by not responding to quarterly income request letters, and income requests can be detailed.  It is important to be aware of overtime hours, as regular/excessive overtime can result in loss of coverage.

April 5th 10-noon - AARP Drivers Safety – AARP leads this course on driver’s safety.  Fee of $12 for AARP members, $14 for non-members.  Certificate given at the end of class – may reduce insurance rates. Payment accepted day of class only.

Fox School District – Gayle Beck, school social worker announced two groups she is involved in that meet regularly.  Anyone interested can attend meetings.
  • CRT (Community Response Team) meets monthly during the school year (August to May). Group consists of any agency in Jefferson County who is interested in attending. We have a speaker each month talk about their agency and the service they provide. Next meeting is March 23rd at Comtrea in Arnold.
  • EJC Homeless Youth Collaboration – This group is a part of Experience Jefferson County (EJC). Meets monthly in effort to help the Homeless Youth of Jefferson County who are still attending school. Next meeting is Wednesday March 7th at 11:00 at the Jefferson County Library, Windsor Branch.
