Meeting Minutes – September 17, 2012

The next Community Forum meeting will be October 15th at 1:00 at Jefferson College, Viking Annex room.  We will be electing new chair members at the November meeting, nominations will be gladly accepted, so please consider serving!

The Community Forum will be hitting the road during 2013 for the months of March, June, July and October.  March will be held at the Arnold Career Center, 3675 W. Outer Rd, Arnold, MO – thank you Sandy Nappier for setting that up!  And June will be held at the MEAAA Northwest Senior Resource Center, 6180 Hwy MM, House Springs.  July and October are still open and we are looking for possible host agencies.

Debby Campbell:

DeSoto Farmer’s Market will hold two upcoming events at 1004 Rock Rd:   

Celebrate Our Heritage event will be held September 22 from 8:00-12:00pm.  There will be a Civil War Reenactment as well as artisan demonstrations.   

Art Mart Day at the Market will be held September 29th from 8:00-12:00pm.  All artisans are invited to display their crafts at the Farmer’s Market.  Call 636-586-4570 for more info on these events.
Get Healthy DeSoto is hosting a Christmas Home Tour Fundraiser on November 24, 2012 from 9:00-3:30.  Advanced tickets are $15, tickets the day of will be $18.  There will also be a raffle for a large flat screen TV.  For tickets call Debby Campbell at 636-586-4570.

Get Healthy Desoto will host a Winter Flakes Run on December 29th in Walther Park.  There will be a 1 Mile Fun Walk, and 5K and 10K Runs.  Registration will be 7:00-8:30am and the race begins at 9:00am.  For more information, visit gethealthydesoto.org or call 636-586-4570.


Stephanie Paul:

Mid-East Area Agency on Aging holds a monthly Caregiver Support Group on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 2pm in the Northwest Senior Resource Center, 6180 Hwy MM, House Springs, MO 63051.  The group is open to any caregiver looking for support and resources.  For more information call Stephanie at 636-253-0558.

Mid-East Area Agency on Aging will be assisting Medicare Beneficiaries with Open Enrollment.  Open Enrollment begins October 15th and ends December 7th for changes to be effective January 1st.  Any Medicare Beneficiary using a Medicare Advantage plan or Medicare Drug Plan can meet with MEAAA for plan comparison and enrollment assistance.  Staff will be available to meet in person on the following dates/locations:

Flu shots will be available at the Jefferson County MEAAA Senior Centers.  Open to the public.  Cost is $25.  $5 off vouchers available through Senior Center for those 60+ or cost billed to Medicare.  Bring Medicare card.

Living Well Foundation has the following upcoming events:

Fall Into New Habits Community Weight Loss Challenge is a 12 week challenge beginning September 17th.  Three cash prize winners will be determined by the highest percentage of weight loss in three categories: men, women and youth.  Cost is $25 per participant.  Cost includes weekly activities, nutrition information by a registered dietician and a 1 week pass to SNAP Fitness.  Contact Allison at Allison@livingwellvillage.org or 636-674-5014 for more information.

Halloween Pub Crawl will be held October 13 from 1pm-6pm.  Cost is $25 per person, t-shirts guaranteed if registration received by September 26th.  Starts at The Wood, 2733 Sutton Blvd, Maplewood.  One free beer or soda at each location.  Additional drink and appetizer specials available at each location.  Raffles and prizes. Sandy Nappier:

Free Computer classes through Jefferson College Continuing Education Department.  Call 636-481-3144 to request catalog or register for classes.

MO Health WINS – must meet eligibility.  Free tuition is available for computer support program through grant for unemployed and underemployed.  Radiology Technologist program will be accepting applications – tuition free if qualified for MO Health WINS.  Call the Career Center 636-287-8909 or Admissions 636-797-3000 for more information.

WIA Youth, Employment training program for ages 16-21.  Applications are being accepted for youth to gain employment skills and receive tuition assistance.

Northwest Jefferson County Library has these upcoming events:

Family History Fair, October 20, 9am-4pm.  Free event with presentations all day:  Basic Genealogy for Beginners, Finding German Roots, Special Collections at NW Library, and US Government National Records Center.  Visit with local genealogical and historical organizations.  Door prizes. Free Orientation to Navigating the Online World.  Three computer classes on Thursdays in October.  October 4th, 11th and 18th from 12:30-2:30.  Open to the public, but space is limited to 10 participants.  Must be able to attend all three sessions.  Keyboard/mouse basics, internet and searching the library catalog are topics covered.  Call Myra Hill, 636-296-5171, for more information.
