Jefferson County Community Forum – Minutes
January 28, 2013

Molly Pfeiffer:

  • Library Books on Your eReader: Free eReader classes.  Space is limited and signup is required.  Call 636-677-8186, email mpfeiffer@jeffcolib.org, or register in the library.  EBooks on a Kindle- Tues, Feb.5, 10-11:30am.  Nook- Wed, Feb.6.  eBooks on Almost Everything Else- Thurs, Feb.7.
  • Womens’ Autoimmune Support Group: monthly, informed support group for women with a variety of autoimmune disorders.  No signup required.  Meets first Saturday of each month.  Next meeting Feb.2, 2-4pm.
  • Food for fines: Every last Friday of the month.  One can of food counts towards one dollar of library fines.
  • Preschool Fair: Saturday, Feb.2.  Free event.  10am Storytime and playtime for children while parents are able to meet with different schools. 


Josh Henry:

  • Free Diabetes Program: Thurs, Jan.31, 6pm.  Endocrinologist Nawras Makhsida will discuss options for diabetes treatment.  Q&A session for public to follow.  Register by calling 636-296-5171. 
  • What a Pain in the Neck: How Posture Can Cause Pain: Wed, Feb.13, 6-8pm.  Dr. Amy Grabowski with ProActive Chiropractic will discuss how to identify, prevent, and correct the effects of posture imbalances that cause neck and upper back pain, headaches, and more.  Register by calling 636-296-5171. 
  • Quilting Classes: A small project will be completed in each class in order to learn basic quilting skills. No charge for classes, and classes are limited to 20 participants.  Supply list available in the library.  Participants must bring own sewing machine.  Register by calling 636-296-5171.  Bias Binding- Sat, Feb.16, 9:30am.  Trapunto Basics- Sat, May 18, 9:30am.  Stained Glass Quilting- Thurs, Aug.22, 6pm.  Hand Quilting- Sat, Nov.9, 9:30am.
  • 15 Annual Poetry Contest: Poetry contest rules and entry forms available in the library.  Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 poems in 3 age categories: 5-11 years, 12-18 years, and 19 years-older.  Entries due Thurs, Feb.28.  Poetry Reading and Awards Ceremony Tues, March 19, 7:30pm.


Jennifer Meyer:

  • Missouri Property Tax Credit (MO-PTC) “Circuit Breaker”: Individuals may be eligible for a portion of real estate taxes based on age and income.  Form to determine eligibility can be accessed online from the MO Dept. of Revenue, page 2 of instructions: http://dor.mo.gov/forms/MO-PTC_Instructions_2012.pdf


Debby Campbell:

  • De Soto Farmer’s Market will resume the 3rd Saturday in April, featuring a tractor parade on Main St.
  • Winter Flakes: Sat, Feb 23, 9am, Walther Park in De Soto.  1 mile walk/run, 5k/10k run.  Fundraiser proceeds enable Get Healthy De Soto. Fees apply, awards given.  All abilities and speeds encouraged to come! Contact Trish Coleman, 314-277-8079.
  • Toilet Talk newsletter promotes upcoming events for Get Healthy De Soto.  Now in a stall near you.


Sandy Nappier:

  • The WIA Youth Program is accepting applications for youth ages 16-21.  Eligible candidates may be selected for summer job program.  Other services also provided.
  •  The Spring Continuing Education catalog is now available.  There are many free computer classes available.  Classes include free textbook. 
  • There are over 3,000 on-line classes available covering a wide range of topics.  Fees vary for each course.   You may call 636.797.3000, ext. 144 for more information or visit www.jeffco.edu.
  • Applications are still being accepted through February 15, 2013 for the Radiological Technology Program.  Applicants must have specific prerequisite courses completed by May, 2013.  If eligible, tuition is free through the MoHealthWINS grant.
