Finalized Meeting Dates for 2010

I heard back from Jefferson College and below are the confirmed meeting dates for 2010.  We weren't able to get our normal room on 4/19 so that seems like a good time to test drive having the meeting on the road at a participant's location.  I will solicit volunteers at the January meeting so please check your availability if you are interested in hosting the meeting.  We'll vote if there are numerous potential hosts and majority rules!

Jefferson County Community Partnership, Jessica Rhodes stated that the Jefferson County Dental Coalition Meeting, December 8, at 3:30 p.m. at JCCP.   The Give Kids a Smile planning meeting will be December 8, at 2pm at JCCP.  Contact Jessica for more information at 636-464-5144 ex 20.  There is an Early Childhood Comprehensive System (ECCS) Meeting on Friday, November 20, at 9:30 a.m. at JCCP.  The Jeffco Express Bus will start on November 30 and runs from 7 a.m. to 7 pm. Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, Missy Waldman gave an update on the MO Health Net Medicaid.  Missy discussed that adult Medicaid will be added to the FAMIS system.  The first roll out in Jefferson County would be January 4 until February 5, 2009.  If adults get a request for information to update the system and they do not send in the information then any state paid program will be cancelled.  Contact Missy for more information. 


Health Care USA, Daphne Terrill is encouraging all to review kids health on the website www.hcusa.org , there are many health and wellness print friendly articles, games and activities.

Get Healthy Desoto, Debbie Campbell distributed the Get Healthy Desoto news letter.  http://gethealthydesoto.blogspot.com.  She stated that the Farmer’s Market will be open every Saturday from 8-12 at 1004 Rock Rd, Desoto until October 31.  She stated that there is a Healthy Lunch and Learn class on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.  The next one will be November 11th from 12:00 until 1:00.  The cost is $7.00 per person and you must register by calling 636-586-4570.  She stated that there is a Zumba class every Tuesday at 5pm at the Early Childhood Center in Desoto.  She stated that the cost is $32.00 for 6 weeks.  Contact Debbie at 636-586-4570.

COMTREA ANNOUNCES AWARD OF FEDERAL GRANT FOR HOMELESS AND REHOUSING 
 

Community Treatment, Inc. (COMTREA) submitted a grant to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to create a collaborative effort to resolve the issue of insufficient housing for individuals and households in Jefferson County, Missouri.    This two-year grant was developed in conjunction with David Kennedy, Steve Stohl, Chuck Banks and the Jefferson County Commission.  The grant was approved for $489,544 and will be coordinated with other social service agencies under the leadership of COMTREA.   

The project will serve individuals and families who meet criteria where no other appropriate housing options have been identified and the financial resources and supports needed to obtain immediate housing or remain in existing housing are lacking.  Criteria will include mental health and substance abuse issues, victims of domestic violence, leaving transitional housing programs, sleeping in an emergency shelter, living on the streets, sudden and significant loss of income, or significant increases in utility costs.  

COMTREA will hire a Case Manager to coordinate the social services necessary to provide these housing solutions for residents of Jefferson County. The program is scheduled to begin January 1, 2010. 
 

Free Financial Management Classes

Free Financial Management Classes at 7 locations around Jefferson County this Fall.
 
University of Missouri Extension is partnering with Jefferson College to offer financial management classes around Jefferson County this fall.  
Classes will cover a variety of financial topics; they will be free and open to the public.  Pre-registration required.  To register, please call Jefferson College Continuing Education at 636.797.3000 Ext. 144.

Jefferson County 9-1-1, Geri Mayer talked about how the tax for 9-1-1 services would start in October.  The program would be implemented in two different phases.  The 9-1-1 service will be able to locate cell phones and do a reverse call to inform the community of any dangerous situations.

HealthCare USA, Daphne Terrill stated that they where having a Back to School Fair on 8-7-09. She stated that HealthCare USA is sponsoring the fair with Jefferson-Franklin Community Action and they need exhibitors for the fair. Please contact John Falcone at 314-444-7903. The fair will be held at Hillsboro Elementary School. Daphne stated that the MO Health New open enrollment begins on 8-1-9. All person enrolled currently will be getting a packet in the mail about open enrollment. They are encouraged to read and complete the paper work. New Mo Health Net contract was awarded and will start October 1, 2009.

Jefferson County Community Partnership, Jessica Rhodes distributed flyers regarding a SIDS and Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Training. This training is monthly. If the parents qualify they can receive a crib with other baby items. You can contact Jessica at 636-464-5144 ex 20. Jessica also stated that there will be a Jefferson County Dental Coalition Meeting on August 10 at 2pm at the Jefferson County Community Partnership in Barnhart.

University of MO Extension, Melissa McAlpine distributed a flyer on Eco Adventure Day Camp to help educate youth. It will be on August 5, 2009 You can register with Melissa Scheer at 636-797-5391. Melissa stated that the Jefferson County Fair will be on July 23-26, if you want to have a booth contact Wanda Kiggans at 797-5391. Melissa also stated that there will be Are You Ready? Emergency Preparedness Training on August 13 at 6:30pm sponsored by Herculaneum Fire Department.

United Way 2-1-1, Phyllis Hicks stated that she collecting and entering information on back to school event fairs.

Get Healthy Desoto, Debby Campbell stated that Tomato Fest Desoto’s farmer’s Market. The Tomato Fest will be on August 1, 2009 at 8am until noon at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church on Rock road. Debby stated that on August 4th there will be a 30 minute Mozzarella cheese making class. The deadline to register is on July 31. It will also be at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church on Rock road. St. Anthony’s Medical Center, Gwyn Harvey distributed the Summer Wellness Guide. All the information regarding the guide can be found at www.stanthonysmedcenter.com.
Gwyn also stated that on June 18th at 4pm there will be free prostate cancer screenings. To register call 800-554-9550.

Comtrea, Jan Freeman distributed registration form for the CAC Golf Fund Raiser Tournament. The golf tournament is on August 14, 2009. Contact Jan at 636-931-2700 ex345 for more information. Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, Missy Waldman gave an update on the new RFP with the state’s MO HealthNet insurance. She stated that the plans should be awarded within the next 14 days. She stated that she has been working with case workers of foster children regarding medications. She distributed a pamphlet on Advocates for Family Health. Contact 800-444-0514 ext 1251.

Jefferson County Library-Arnold, Meredith McCarthy distributed flyers regarding What’s happening at your library. What’s happening at your library?, flyer is events happening at the Arnold Branch. Calendar of events can be located at www.jeffersoncountylibrary.org. She also handed out a flyer Jefferson County by the Numbers. This is the updated stats of Jefferson County. She distributed flyers regarding Summer Programs for kids. Contact Amy Held at 636-296-2204. There also will be a Computer Survival Camp in September; you can contact Meredith for more information.

HealthCare USA, John Falcone stated that they where having a Back to School Fair on 8-7-09. She stated that HealthCare USA is sponsoring the fair with Jefferson-Franklin Community Action and they need exhibitors for the fair. Please contact Paulette at 636-798-2686 ex 119. The fair will be held at Hillsboro Elementary School. John distributed a flyer regarding the new web site for Health Care USA. The web site is www.hcusa.org. John also stated that Health Care USA can help their clients with enrollment to 4-H!

Jefferson County Community Partnership, Jessica Rhodes distributed flyers regarding JCCP open house on June 23 at 11am. They are celebrating 15 years of service in Jefferson County! You can RSVP to Sophie at 636-464-5144 ex 13 by June 19.
Jessica stated that they are helping with a SIDS and Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Training. This training is monthly. If the parent quality’s they can receive a crib with other baby items. You can contact Jessica at 636-464-5144 ex 20. The next class is June 16 and July 21.

University of MO Extension, Melissa McAlpine distributed a flyer on a Canning Workshop on July 7th at 6pm. The workshop will be at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Desoto. Cost is $5.00. One must register by July 1st. You can register with Melissa at 636-797-5391.

Welcome to the Jefferson County Community Services Forum Blog!

Formed in 1979, the Jefferson County Community Services Forum is a network of helping professionals representing various agencies, organizations, schools, churches, and concerned citizens who meet monthly to share concerns and resources available to Jefferson County residents. There is no membership fee. Those providing services to residents of Jefferson County or exploring the possibility of service provisions are welcome to attend.

Meetings are on the third Monday of each month at 1 :00 p.m. at Jefferson College-Viking Room, Highway 21, in Hillsboro, Missouri.

Disability Resource Association, Erin Benz stated she did not have any new information at this time. 

United Way 2-1-1. Phyllis Hicks reported that they have received 68 calls to the 2-1-1 number from 5-1-09 through 5-18-09.  Out of the 668 calls only 19 were unmet services. 

MEAAA, Stephanie Paul distributed flyers regarding Stimulus Payments and Benefit Check ups.  The Stimulus Payments will be received by 6-4-09.  Recipients of social security, SSI, VA pension, survivors or disability benefits should receive a $250.00 payment by June 2,, 2009.  Benefitscheckup.org is a helpful website that can show benefits a person is eligible for and provide applications or contact information for those programs.   
 

St. Louis Regional Office, Peggy Jones stated she did not have any new information at this time. 

Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, Missy Waldman gave an update on the new RFP with the state’s MO HealthNet insurance.  She stated that several insurance companies have been interested also has new company’s applying.  She stated that the new regulations will go into effect on 10-1-09.  She stated that the pharmacy will be carved out and persons will have to use their FFS cards.  She also stated that women qualify to receive family planning and/or STD services if they lose MO HealthNet eligibility after the birth of their child or if they are uninsured.
