COMTREA ANNOUNCES AWARD OF FEDERAL GRANT FOR HOMELESS AND REHOUSING 
 

Community Treatment, Inc. (COMTREA) submitted a grant to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to create a collaborative effort to resolve the issue of insufficient housing for individuals and households in Jefferson County, Missouri.    This two-year grant was developed in conjunction with David Kennedy, Steve Stohl, Chuck Banks and the Jefferson County Commission.  The grant was approved for $489,544 and will be coordinated with other social service agencies under the leadership of COMTREA.   

The project will serve individuals and families who meet criteria where no other appropriate housing options have been identified and the financial resources and supports needed to obtain immediate housing or remain in existing housing are lacking.  Criteria will include mental health and substance abuse issues, victims of domestic violence, leaving transitional housing programs, sleeping in an emergency shelter, living on the streets, sudden and significant loss of income, or significant increases in utility costs.  

COMTREA will hire a Case Manager to coordinate the social services necessary to provide these housing solutions for residents of Jefferson County. The program is scheduled to begin January 1, 2010. 
 

Free Financial Management Classes

Free Financial Management Classes at 7 locations around Jefferson County this Fall.
 
University of Missouri Extension is partnering with Jefferson College to offer financial management classes around Jefferson County this fall.  
Classes will cover a variety of financial topics; they will be free and open to the public.  Pre-registration required.  To register, please call Jefferson College Continuing Education at 636.797.3000 Ext. 144.

Jefferson County Library-Arnold, Meredith McCarthy distributed flyers regarding What’s happening at your library.  What’s happening at your library?, flyer is events happening at the Arnold Branch.  Calendar of events can be located at www.jeffersoncountylibrary.org.  She also distributed flyer for Active County Entrepreneurs Program.  It is a mentoring program for small business owners in Jefferson County.  Contact Melissa McAlpine at 636-797-5391 for more information.

Get Healthy Desoto, Debbie Campbell distributed the Get Healthy Desoto news letter.  http://gethealthydesoto.blogspot.com.  She stated that the Farmer’s Market will be open every Saturday from 8-12 at 1004 Rock Rd, Desoto until October 31.  She stated that there is a Healthy Lunch and Learn class on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.  The cost is $7.00 per person and you must register.  She stated that there is a Yoga Class every Wednesday at 1004 Rock Rd.  The cost is $20.00 for 6 weeks.  She stated that there is a Zumba class every Tuesday at 5pm at the Early Childhood Center in Desoto.  She stated that the cost is $32.00 for 6 weeks.  Contact Debbie at 636-586-4570. 

Memory Care Home Solutions, Steve Miskovic stated that his agency provides care giver training for patients with memory loss.  They will also provide follow up care with the care giver for one year.  Contact Steve at 314-645-6247 for more information.

American Red Cross, Dale Chambers stated that there a free Disaster Education Presentation for all ages, contact Dale at 636-464-9150.  Dale distributed handouts on Pandemic Flu, Preparing Makes Sense for Older Americans, and Preparing Makes Sense for People with Disabilities and Special Needs.  Dale stated that on October 21, 2009 there will be a Community Heroes Blood Drive at the Jefferson College Viking Room.  Also there will be adult CPR AED class with the blood drive.  The cost is $10.00.  Please visit www.redcrossstl.org to register as soon as possible.

HealthCare USA, Daphne Terrill stated that there is open enrollment for Health Net Managed Care.  Daphne distributed the Doc’s Community CollaBearation Newsletter.  Daphne distributed candy bars to thank all the partners in the Jefferson County Forum.

Jefferson County 9-1-1, Geri Mayer talked about how the tax for 9-1-1 services would start in October.  The program would be implemented in two different phases.  The 9-1-1 service will be able to locate cell phones and do a reverse call to inform the community of any dangerous situations.

HealthCare USA, Daphne Terrill stated that they where having a Back to School Fair on 8-7-09. She stated that HealthCare USA is sponsoring the fair with Jefferson-Franklin Community Action and they need exhibitors for the fair. Please contact John Falcone at 314-444-7903. The fair will be held at Hillsboro Elementary School. Daphne stated that the MO Health New open enrollment begins on 8-1-9. All person enrolled currently will be getting a packet in the mail about open enrollment. They are encouraged to read and complete the paper work. New Mo Health Net contract was awarded and will start October 1, 2009.

Jefferson County Community Partnership, Jessica Rhodes distributed flyers regarding a SIDS and Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Training. This training is monthly. If the parents qualify they can receive a crib with other baby items. You can contact Jessica at 636-464-5144 ex 20. Jessica also stated that there will be a Jefferson County Dental Coalition Meeting on August 10 at 2pm at the Jefferson County Community Partnership in Barnhart.

University of MO Extension, Melissa McAlpine distributed a flyer on Eco Adventure Day Camp to help educate youth. It will be on August 5, 2009 You can register with Melissa Scheer at 636-797-5391. Melissa stated that the Jefferson County Fair will be on July 23-26, if you want to have a booth contact Wanda Kiggans at 797-5391. Melissa also stated that there will be Are You Ready? Emergency Preparedness Training on August 13 at 6:30pm sponsored by Herculaneum Fire Department.

Join-N, Robin Scott reported that she is working on updating the Community Resource Directory. She would like to hear from those that have worked on the Jefferson County Community Resource Directory in the past. You can contact Robin at 636-464-1880.

United Way 2-1-1, Phyllis Hicks stated that she collecting and entering information on back to school event fairs.

Get Healthy Desoto, Debby Campbell stated that Tomato Fest Desoto’s farmer’s Market. The Tomato Fest will be on August 1, 2009 at 8am until noon at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church on Rock road. Debby stated that on August 4th there will be a 30 minute Mozzarella cheese making class. The deadline to register is on July 31. It will also be at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church on Rock road. This program features a lecture and meetings with experts for those concerned about themselves or a loved one’s memory and those who are recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Through this program you will:
•Know the signs of dementia and Alzheimer’s and learn about early detection and treatment
•Receive help for living with dementia, and learn how to tap into the Alzheimer's Association for information and support
