Disability Resource Association, Erin Benz stated that they are collecting non-perishable food items for the Christmas Food Baskets.  Contact Erin to make the donation.  Also the office will be a Toys for Tots distributor.

St. Anthony’s Medical Center, Gwyn Harvey distributed Publication: Your Health Today for December, January, and February.  This publication has information regarding Health and Wellness events.  If you have any questions contact Gwyn at 314-525-3419.

Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, Missy Waldman distributed the Advocates for Family Health brochure.  Contact Missy for more information at 314-256-8767. 

Jefferson County Library-Arnold, Meredith McCarthy distributed flyers regarding What’s happening at your library.  What’s happening at your library?, flyer is events happening at the Arnold Branch.  Calendar of events can be located at www.jeffersoncountylibrary.org.  There will be a book discussion on Paris to the Moon by Adam Gopnick on December 10, 2009 at 1:00pm.  Contact Julie Petot at 636-296-5171 for more information. Get Healthy Desoto, Debbie Campbell distributed the Get Healthy Desoto news letter.  http://gethealthydesoto.blogspot.com.  She stated that Desoto’s 5th Better Body Challenge, Health Fair and Initial Weigh-In will be on January 21, 2010 at 5pm at Vineland Elementary School Gym.  If you would like to participate or be a vendor, please contact Debbie at 636-586-4570.

Jefferson County Community Partnership, Jessica Rhodes stated that the Jefferson County Dental Coalition Meeting, December 8, at 3:30 p.m. at JCCP.   The Give Kids a Smile planning meeting will be December 8, at 2pm at JCCP.  Contact Jessica for more information at 636-464-5144 ex 20.  There is an Early Childhood Comprehensive System (ECCS) Meeting on Friday, November 20, at 9:30 a.m. at JCCP.  The Jeffco Express Bus will start on November 30 and runs from 7 a.m. to 7 pm. Information can be found at www.jeffcoexpress.org.  The Jeffco Express Bus Commissioning Service will be November 24th at 1 pm at Desoto Wal-mart.  RSVP with Dennis Murphy at 636-464-5144 ex 15.

American Red Cross, Dale Chambers distributed handouts on 3Actions Disaster Preparedness and Power is Out Disaster Preparedness.  He stated to contact him for copies to distribute, at 636-464-9150.

Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, Missy Waldman gave an update on the MO Health Net Medicaid.  Missy discussed that adult Medicaid will be added to the FAMIS system.  The first roll out in Jefferson County would be January 4 until February 5, 2009.  If adults get a request for information to update the system and they do not send in the information then any state paid program will be cancelled.  Contact Missy for more information. 


Health Care USA, Daphne Terrill is encouraging all to review kids health on the website www.hcusa.org , there are many health and wellness print friendly articles, games and activities.

Get Healthy Desoto, Debbie Campbell distributed the Get Healthy Desoto news letter.  http://gethealthydesoto.blogspot.com.  She stated that the Farmer’s Market will be open every Saturday from 8-12 at 1004 Rock Rd, Desoto until October 31.  She stated that there is a Healthy Lunch and Learn class on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.  The next one will be November 11th from 12:00 until 1:00.  The cost is $7.00 per person and you must register by calling 636-586-4570.  She stated that there is a Zumba class every Tuesday at 5pm at the Early Childhood Center in Desoto.  She stated that the cost is $32.00 for 6 weeks.  Contact Debbie at 636-586-4570.


University of MO Extension, Melissa McAlpine distributed a flyer regarding a Dream Workshop, to introduce high school students to entrepreneurship.  Contact Melissa at 636-797-5391 for more information.

COMTREA ANNOUNCES AWARD OF FEDERAL GRANT FOR HOMELESS AND REHOUSING 
 

Community Treatment, Inc. (COMTREA) submitted a grant to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to create a collaborative effort to resolve the issue of insufficient housing for individuals and households in Jefferson County, Missouri.    This two-year grant was developed in conjunction with David Kennedy, Steve Stohl, Chuck Banks and the Jefferson County Commission.  The grant was approved for $489,544 and will be coordinated with other social service agencies under the leadership of COMTREA.   

The project will serve individuals and families who meet criteria where no other appropriate housing options have been identified and the financial resources and supports needed to obtain immediate housing or remain in existing housing are lacking.  Criteria will include mental health and substance abuse issues, victims of domestic violence, leaving transitional housing programs, sleeping in an emergency shelter, living on the streets, sudden and significant loss of income, or significant increases in utility costs.  

COMTREA will hire a Case Manager to coordinate the social services necessary to provide these housing solutions for residents of Jefferson County. The program is scheduled to begin January 1, 2010. 
 

Free Financial Management Classes

Free Financial Management Classes at 7 locations around Jefferson County this Fall.
 
University of Missouri Extension is partnering with Jefferson College to offer financial management classes around Jefferson County this fall.  
Classes will cover a variety of financial topics; they will be free and open to the public.  Pre-registration required.  To register, please call Jefferson College Continuing Education at 636.797.3000 Ext. 144.

St. Anthony’s Medical Center, Gwyn Harvey stated distributed the September 2009 thru November 2009 Your Healthy Today publication.  In the publication the now events section.  She stated that there is a Prostate Cancer Support Group meeting on September 24, 2009.  She stated that there is a Amputee Support Group on October 12, 2009.  If you have any questions contact Gwyn at 314-525-3419.
